WHY I BUILT SayWordy

I want to talk with my parents as easily as I think in English.
I’m Paul. I’m Taiwanese and grew up in San Marino, California. I went to Chinese school on weekends, but I still don’t always have the words in Mandarin or Taiwanese for everything I want to say to my parents.
My wife, Eliza, and I bring different cultures together in our family, and that connection is part of why I’m building SayWordy.
I’m building SayWordy to close that gap, for my family and for yours.
We’re fortunate to be able to travel, and Japan is one of our favorite places. I don’t speak Japanese, and many restaurants we’d like to call speak only Japanese. I wanted a way to call them myself, ask questions, and see if I could make a reservation.
GOOD QUESTIONS
Less wondering.
More talking.
No. SayWordy calls both phones. Translation starts when the other line answers; there is no invitation to accept.
Yes, when you turn on “Hear the original voice.” Their voice plays alongside the translation and lowers while the translation speaks. Headphones help prevent echo. You can also choose translation only.
Calling is currently available to US phone numbers. Spoken languages can be different from the country of either phone number. A passcode is required for private access when prompted.
No audio is recorded for new calls. Speech is processed for translation and a bilingual transcript is saved.
Translation can make mistakes, especially with names, background noise or people talking over each other. Choose a specific language when you know it, speak clearly, and check important details together.
